Honorifics

The Uzbek people use honorifics - titles that indicate esteem or courtesy - to the ends of first names to show respect. This short lesson describes the honorifics and in which contexts to use them. Note: we briefly covered these in the Introductions lesson too. 

  • Aka 

    • "older brother"​

    • used for older men

  • Opa / Ona

    • "older sister"​

    • used for older women

  • -jon 

    • a suffix added to younger men​

  • Bi / Xon

    • added to women's names
